Singapore – The JobStreet.com Singapore Slingers continued their winning ways on Sunday by defeating the visiting Bangkok Cobras 73-48. This is the Slingers 3rd straight victory. Singaporean Wong Wei Long also made history as he led the game in scoring with 15 points, becoming the first local to do so. Louis Graham and Don Dulay added 14 and 10 points, respectively, in a winning effort.

I am very happy, not just for myself, but for our team. Everything that I did today, I give the credit back to my team. We were able to execute on offense that allowed everyone to score,” said Wong Wei Long.

Newcomers Bangkok Cobras, who are coached by former NBA player and WNBA coach Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, went toe to toe with the home team in the first quarter. The Slingers still weren’t able to find their rhythm early in the game with Donald Little, Louis Graham, and Vaughn Canta all feeling under the weather. The quarter ended locked at 14 all.

The JobStreet.com Singapore Slingers put on their defensive clamps at the start of the 2nd Quarter, holding the visiting team to only 7 points. The Slingers forced the Cobras into 7 turnovers in the opening half, and also limited them to 29% field goal shooting. Louis Graham led the Slingers in scoring at halftime with 12 points, as the Slingers enjoyed a comfortable 33-21 margin.

After the break, with the Cobras matching the Slingers point for point, the game turned heavily into the favor of the Slingers mainly due to the efforts of local Singaporeans Wong Wei Long and Desmond Oh. Both guards were instrumental to the team going on a 10-3 run that closed the quarter with the Slingers leading 52 to the Cobras 32.

Guard Desmond Oh, who scored all 8 of his points in the 2nd half, said: “This win is very good for us. Our fans can see that our locals have improved and we can now compete on a consistent basis.”With Vaughn (Canta) being sick and unable to play in the 2nd half, we took it upon ourselves to step up and carry the load on both ends of the floor,” he added.

The fans who turned up at the Singapore Indoor Stadium saw the lead balloon to 31 points with 4:19 left in the game. The Slingers bench was a big factor as they outscored the Cobras 30-15. Bangkok was also limited to 16/69 shooting, and finished the game with a 23% field goal percentage. They were also forced into 16 turnovers.

JobStreet.Com Singapore Slingers are now in 2nd place atop the AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League Standings with a 3-1 record, while the Bangkok Cobras have slipped to a 1-2 win-loss record.

With a 3 game winning streak in hand, the JobStreet.com Singapore Slingers look forward to hosting the San Miguel Beermen on Wednesday, February 1st. This heavy weight matchup is a dedicated game for Cancer Awareness. The home team will don Pink uniforms for the game. Tip Off is at 8PM at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
