BANGKOK – The Singapore Slingers emerged victorious as they defeated Mono Vampire in front of their home crowd, 91-81, to bag their first win of the season.
Singapore started off uncontested with a 9-0 run courtesy of John Fields and Xavier Alexander. The Thailand-based cagers coudn’t seem to find their rhythm early in the opening frame, with baskets from the visiting team finding the bottom of the net here and there. Mike Singletary finally put them in the boards midway through the quarter with an open layup.
The Slingers further asserted their dominance over the hosts as they led by as much as 15 early in the game. At the half, they carried a pleasant 42-31 lead as Fields and Alexander continued to sizzle from all corners.
The third frame saw the Mono Vampire spark up a run to trim the deficit to five as import Marcus Keene erupted with 13 points to keep them within striking distance. But the X-Man wasn’t done yet.
Alexander exploded for 18 in the final quarter alone to add to his 15 points to ultimately snatch their first win in the opposing team’s territory. Dominating the paint was Fields with 23 markers and 13 rebounds, while Jerran Young chipped in 17 .
Keene paced the Mono Vampire with a whopping 35 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. He also drilled 8 of his 14 shots from beyond the arc. Singletary came up big with 28 points to go with 8 rebounds.
The Singapore Slingers will look to defend their home court once again and up their tally to a 2-1 win-loss card as they go against the Westports Malaysia Dragons in their season debut.
