Singapore Indoor Stadium, Singapore – The JobStreet.com Singapore Slingers made a furious run late in the game against the San Miguel Beermen but came up short as they fell to the visiting team 68-61.
Chris Banchero led all scorers with 19 points and 6 assists. Brian Williams had 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Leo Avenido added 10 points for the Beermen who have won their 6th straight game.
Rashaad Singleton, playing in his first home game as a Slinger, finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds & 4 blocks. Phillip Morrison, in his 2nd game as a Slinger, added 14 points for the home team. Rashad Jones-Jennings had another double-double performance with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Jun Cabatu also made a solid contribution finishing with 10 points.
Down 22 points with 9:40 to go in the final quarter, the JobStreet.com Singapore Slingers made a spirited run at the visitors. Desmond Oh sparked an offensive run as he hit a three pointer after a miss by Hubalde. The Beermen were unable to setup their offense as the Slingers applied full court pressure defensively on every possession late in the game. A basket by Cabatu cut the Beermen lead to 8 with 2:33 left in the game. Avenido broke the scoring spell for the Beermen with a field goal that put their lead back to 10 with 1:43 on the clock. Time wasn’t on the side of the Slingers as they fell to their 6th straight loss.
“After a decent start to the game, we went individual and we struggled to match San Miguel’s intensity in the 1st half. Once down 20, the team seemed to find the spark to at least make a run and turn the 4th quarter into a contest. If we can play for all 4 quarters like how we played the 4th quarter tonight, we will win some games in the second half of the season,” said Neo Beng Siang, Head Coach of the JobStreet.com Singapore Slingers.
