The Singapore Slingers opened their 2015-16 ABL season with a hard fought loss to the defending ABL champions HiTech Bangkok City in Bangkok 83-74. The Slingers started fast racing to an early 8-0 lead, HiTech steady and went on a 9-0 run of their own, the first quarter went back and forth with neither team able to grab control. The quarter end deadlocked at 18-18.
HiTech lifted their tempo in the 2nd quarter and with the Slingers missing several opportunities, the defending ABL champions closed out the first half leading 43-34.
HiTech extended their lead to as many as 19pts at one stage in the 3rd quarter before closing out the period leading 67-52. The Slingers picked up their defensive intensity and were able to eat into the 15pt lead, with 6 minutes to play in the final period the deficit was down to just 6points.
After a few crucial turnovers by the Slingers in the last 6 minutes HiTech was able to hold off a spirited Slingers team to open the season with a win.
For the Slingers new Import Xavier Alexander had an impressive debut finishing with 30pts, 7 rebs & 5 assists, Justin Howard finished with 20pts & 17 rebs.
For the Slingers they have little time to dwell on the loss to the defending ABL champions as they face the Saigon Heat in Saigon this Saturday.
