Singapore – It has been confirmed that the Singapore Slingers will participate in the inaugural Cable Beach Invitational Basketball Tournament that will tip-off in September 2011. The event is to be staged at Broome’s beautiful Cable Beach in Western Australia. Broome is a tourist town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, 2,200 kms north of Perth.
Other teams that have confirmed their participation in the tournament are the Australia NBL’s Perth Wildcats, the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), and the Indonesian National Team.
The Outdoor International Basketball Tournament will be played on a specially-made court with seating for approximately 1,500 spectators. This spectacular court will overlook Cable Beach. ESPN will broadcast the matches live on Star Sports. Dubbed the Cable Beach Invitational, it will be held on September 30 to October 1.
Australia’s Tourist Minister Kim Hames said: “It’s difficult to imagine basketball being played at a more exotic natural location than Cable Beach.” He added that “it’s the kind of event that will generate significant vibrancy in the Kimberley region as well as valuable international media exposure for Broome and Cable Beach. There’s a real international flavour with the Perth Wildcats taking on the Shanghai Sharks from China, the Singapore Slingers and the Indonesian National Team.”
Singapore Slingers General Manager Michael Johnson said: “This is another great opportunity for the Singapore Slingers to represent Singapore and promote the Slingers brand at a world-class international basketball tournament in what is shaping up to be a one of kind spectacular event played on a purpose built open air arena right beside beautiful Cable Beach in Broome. We are grateful to RV Sport, the promoter of this event and the company behind the successful YOUYI Games recently held in Singapore, for inviting the Slingers to be involved in such a quality tournament featuring the likes of a perennial Australian NBL championship team, the Perth Wildcats, the Shanghai Sharks of the CBA and the Indonesian National Team. This is an opportunity we relish and very much look forward to the challenge ahead.”
The Singapore Slingers compete in the Air Asia ASEAN Basketball League which will tip-off it’s third season in January 2012.
