The Singapore Slingers opened their Merlion Cup campaign with a solid 79-71 win against Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor from Taiwan on the opening night of the 10th Edition of the Merlion Cup Basketball Invitational Tournament at the OCBC Arena Singapore.
The Slingers led by as many as 19 points but 22 turnovers allowed the Taiwanese team to get back to within 8 points. The Slingers will need to take better care of the ball if they are to compete with the Shanghai Sharks on Friday night.
Singapore Slingers American Imports Xavier Alexander 21pts, 11rebs, 5 assists & 2 steals and Justin Howard 20pts & 17rebs led the way but the Slingers also had very good contributions from local players Wong Wei Long who finished with 13pts & 4 rebs and Leon Kwek who posted 10pts, 3rebs & 3 steals in a good all round game.
The Slingers next game is Friday at 8:30pm against the Shanghai Sharks.
