It was a very special night for ABL fans. Sapporo Slam Jam Saigon 2013 gave ABL fans a unique combinations of entertainment from musical performances, 3-point contest and the most-anticipted event, AirAsia Slam Dunk contest. All the ABL teams were on hand to participate and enjoy the festivities at Phu To Stadium, Vietnam.
ABL players like San Miguel Beermen’s Brian Williams, Westports Malaysia Dragons’ Moala Tautuaa and Saigon Heat’s fan favorite Jai Reyes were having so much fun at the event as they were dancing along with the Saigon Heat Hot Girls.
The three-point contest was won by the youngest player in the competition. Despite heavy competition from veteran players, JobStreet.com Singapore Slingers 22 year old Lim Sheng Yu was not scared one bit. He did not show any fear as he led the qualifying round with 14 points, followed by Leo Avenido with 13 points, Jai reyes and Mario Wuysang with 11 points, Wacharapong Tongsri with 10 points and Loh Shee Fai with 8 points. With that result, it set up an exciting battle between Sheng Yu and Avenido for the first ever 3-point contest champions.
Avenido, who went first in the final round, was not able to put enough pressure for Sheng Yu as he only finished with 7 points. Sheng Yu was able to match Avenido’s output on third rack on his way to finish with 13 points and winning the first ever 3-point contest.
The main event, AirAsia Slam Dunk contest, featured all the high-flyers in the ABL. Beermen’s new import Justin Williams put on a show for the fans. in the qualifying round, Williams started by dunking with two balls and a one-handed slam from almost the free throw line which gave him a total of 89 points. David Palmer of Saigon Heat got the crowds behind him. Palmer also finished with 89 points, beating Wutipong Dasom, Chris Daniels, Delvin Goh and Moala Tautuaa.
In the final round, Williams and Palmer get one dunk each to win the crown. Palmer, who went first, received 48 points which forced Williams to do his best dunk. Needed to score 49 points to win the slam dunk crown, Williams did just that and put on a show for the fans by putting on a sunglasses and did an amazing windmill to bring home the AirAsia Slam Dunk crown.
