5th November 2014 – After tabulating the votes, the AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League announced that the winner of the 2014 AirAsia ABL Most Valuable Player – Local, is Wong Wei Long from the JobStreet.com Singapore Slingers.

“A big thank you to the Singapore Slingers for giving me an opportunity to join the big family and for providing me with the platforms for me to grow and improve both as a person and a player,” Wei Long said. “Not to forget our coaches who have put in much time and effort into the team. I am fortunate to have my teammates with me on this amazing life journey.”

Known for his fearlessness when driving to the rim and his sharpshooting, Wei Long took his game to new heights in his fifth season with the Slingers. In the 2014 ABL Season, the 26-year old guard guided his Slingers to a 12-8 record and to the ABL Playoffs as the third seed.

The 5-foot-10 guard earned the award after an outstanding 2014 regular season, finishing as the highest scorer among all local players with an 11 points per game average. But, his stats are only a small part of what he brings to his team. He has emerged as a natural leader on the court and never afraid to take big shots at the end of the game.

Wei Long’s best game this season came on August 3rd where he poured in his season-best 23 points to help his team grab a 77-74 win over the Saigon Heat at the OCBC Arena, Singapore. One month later on September 12th, Wei Long had another clutch performance against the Heat. With the game on the line, Wei Long knocked down three clutch shots which gave the Slingers a big road victory, 76-73.

Wong Wei Long was awarded the MVP ahead of Hi-Tech Bangkok City’s high-flyer Wutipong Dasom and Westports Malaysia Dragons’ shooter Loh Shee Fai.
