Multiple defensive stops in the second half paved the way for the Singapore Slingers to notch their
second straight victory in Batam, Indonesia. The 88-81 win against the Macau Black Bears propelled the
Slingers to a 4-2 record In the 2023 ABL Invitational.

Xavier Alexander finished with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists in a player of the game performance,
Alexander stepped it up another gear in fourth quarter control the tempo on both ends of the floor.
Other than scoring nine points in the final quarter, he also contributed to key defensive stops and had 2
blocks and a steal to prevent any late comeback from the Black Bears.

It was also a game where the Slingers local players stepped up with Delvin Goh leading the way with
nine points, seven of which came in the second half while Kelvin Lim scored a valuable seven. Points off
the bench. Jackson Mah’s solid second quarter performance gave him six crucial points to push the
Slingers to a five-point lead at the end of the first half.

With the Slingers playing solid defense in the second half, they were able to create turnovers and fast
break opportunities resulting in 10 points off turnovers and 13 fast break points which was enough to
keep the Macau team at bay.

 

 

However, it didn’t come easily for the Slingers as they had a slow start in the first quarter where they
trailed by as much as eight points during the first seven minutes of the game. The Slingers woke up and
quickly turned it around with multiple defensive stops to cut the lead to one.

On offense, the extra passes didn’t hurt the Slingers at all as they were able to get better looks and that
helped the Slingers shot a season high 52% from the field as opposed to Black Bears’ 44%. Bench
scoring, (15 points), was good for a second start game for the Slingers and this allowed for the starters
to get needed breaks during the game.

Up next for the Singapore Slingers will be an encounter against NS Matrix on the 16th of January as they
shoot for their third straight win and a chance to push for a top 2 spot after the Batam tournament.
