Singapore Slingers Bounce Back with a 77-62 Win Over Laskar Dreya Indonesia
24th August 2014, Batam – JobStreet.com Singapore Slingers cruised to a 77-62 win over Laskar Dreya South Sumatra at the Hi-Test Arena, Batam, Indonesia.
In his second game with the Slingers, Dior Lowhorn looked much more comfortable with the Slingers offense as he finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Kyle Jeffers posted 19 points while Wong Wei Long added 14 points for the Slingers, which improved to a 6-4 record for the third position in the 2014 AirAsia ASEAN Baskeball League standings.
Dreya’s top scorer Falando Jones felt under the weather and had to sit out of this game. With Jones sitting out, newcomer Moustapha Ndoye paired up with Nikola Kuga for this game.
The home team came out blazing, hitting several 3’s to jump out to a n early 10-2 lead after scoring 10 unanswered points. Kuga capped off the run with a three-pointer just three minutes after tip-off. But, the Slingers unleashed a 10-2 run of their own to tie the game at 12 on a three-pointer and put back from Lowhorn. Singapore managed to grab a 19-17 lead at the end of first quarter.
Dreya’s offense was shut down by some Slingers’ solid defense as they were limited to only 2 field goals in the second period. On the other side, the Slingers’ offense was on fire as they outscored Dreya 24-7. Russel Low made a reverse layup and Wei Long made a triple right before the halftime buzzer which gave the Slingers a 43-24 lead at the break.
The Slingers never looked back after that. Jeffers opened the third quarter with a dunk, followed by a Lowhorn put back and triple to give the Slingers their biggest lead at 50-24 with 8:43 left in the third quarter.
Dreya failed to launch any serious challenge for the rest of the game. They managed to shave their deficit to as little as 15 points, 64-49, after a 13-3 run with 3:37 left. However, Slingers answered with 7 straight points to hand Dreya their seventh loss of the season.
Ndoye had a solid debut for Dreya with a 18 points and 16 rebounds performance. Rexander Leynes scored 12 points while Serbian Import Kuga added 9 points.
The Slingers will try to avenge an early season loss when they host the ABL top ranked Hi-Tech Bangkok City on Sunday August 31 at the OCBC Arena, Singapore. Tip-off is 4.00pm.
